How Location Awareness Will Change Your Life

Get ready for location aware marketing.
A while ago someone dealing in logistics realised that identifying an object without knowing it’s location or which direction it was travelling was about as useful as being naked in a foreign country without a credit card. As soon as this thinking became a little more widely accepted location-awareness became buzz.
Most of us have now had experience with sat-nav GPS and realise how useful this technology can be. What has changed recently however is the launch of the 3G iPhone.
The iPhone has a number of different methods of knowing exactly where it is, all of them very boring. It gets interesting when you start to see what people have done with this technology already.
People using the iPhone and all those that come after it will be able to attach location information to pictures, video and text based comments. This opens the door to advertising messages that only appear when you are nearby. Or what about an ad that directs you to a certain shop?
When this article was written the G3 version of the iPhone had been on the market for about 2 weeks and there were already 20 – 30 location aware apps available for download. This is telling us that people don’t just want information; they want ALL the information for the topic THEY are interested in.
The Google application that can be downloaded to the iPhone can already tell you the location of the closest shop if you search for something like “pizza”. How can this experience be made more interactive? One thing you can bet is that everybody will want to be making use of this technology soon if they are not doing so already.
Life Hacker has written a great article about location awareness and how it will affect everyone. Read about it here
